Measuring the level of the sea is an important tool not only for sailors, air navigation, cartography, geology , but also is an important indicator in the study of climate change and predicting its changes. For example, scientists at the Swedish Chalmers University of Technology have developed a new method for measuring the water level.
The method consists in the use of satellite signals navigation systems such as GPS and GLONASS. The system uses two antennas, covered with white fairings, which simultaneously receive direct satellite signals and the signals reflected from the water surface.
After the computation of the data obtained can determine the level of the sea. Thus the frequency of measurements can be up to 20 measurements per second, according to the resource gizmag.com.
"We use the usual satellite signals that take mobile phones and car navigation systems," - says one of the creators of the system.
Furthermore, an important feature of the device is able to measure the soil level of the sea and at the same time from the same position. This will be taken into account in studies not only the water level, but also the movement of soil.
In the future, the researchers plan to add some improvements to the new system, which will increase the accuracy of measurements.
